Beginner's Question: What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence has recently made headlines, with Elon Musk's OpenAI defeating experts in DOTA 2 and Artificial Intelligence reconstructing the periodic table in hours. It is hard to spend a day on the internet without coming across at least one item on a new feat accomplished in the industry. In fact, artificial intelligence is no longer a faraway ideal but is deeply embedded in our daily lives, with many internet programs and services we use, such as YouTube and Facebook. Because we use apps and services that use AI to improve our experience on a regular basis, it is critical that we grasp what Artificial Intelligence is and how it works.

Simply said, Artificial Intelligence is the development of computer systems that are perfectly capable of executing a variety of tasks often associated with human talents such as thinking, understanding, analyzing, and so on. Consider OpenAI defeating experts in a game of DOTA 2. It's a complicated game that asks you to adjust to the scenario as it arises. Consider pitting a machine against a person in such a scenario where the possibilities are limitless. What causes this?

Humans have always defined everything for the computer and merely gave it to the computer, which can then do a very restricted number of jobs based on the information it was fed. In this case, a person is defining all of the alternatives. However, with Artificial Intelligence, humans may simply create a system that can educate itself to describe any further possibilities that humans may not have considered.

Instead of showing a computer 10 photos of an apple and then asking it to choose one of those apples from a pool of photos, you could feed all possible examples of an apple into a computer, regardless of size, shape, or color, and "teach" it to recognize patterns and decide for itself whether something is an apple or not. When Facebook proposes tags on photos you upload, it employs a similar technique.

Artificial intelligence analyses massive volumes of data, identify patterns in the data, and then devises a method to use the data to solve a specific problem. It can be extremely useful for increasing efficiency and saving time because it is much faster than humans and does not tire, it can add a lot more to existing intelligence by discovering new patterns and solutions, it is much more accurate than humans, and one of the most important factors is that it learned and grew on its own - that is, it is capable of teaching itself from existing and new data.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly expanding, infiltrating a variety of industries such as human resources, finance, law, education, security, and healthcare. This is primarily due to significant advances in technology (think the processing power required to analyze all of that data) and subfields such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Natural Language Processing.

There has been a lot of discussion concerning the ethical aspects of Artificial Intelligence, specifically the techniques of data collection and its safety of it. However, it is one of the most incredible discoveries or advancements that mankind has ever made, and it is revolutionizing every area. We should certainly expect significant gains because they are less expensive and more efficient.
